MATT LENZ is a New York based freelance theater director who has
worked all over the world with many of the industry's biggest and brightest talents.
He recently directed the hit Off-Broadway revival of Pageant: The Musical (which received a Drama Desk nomination for Best Revival of a Musical), the new comedy The Irish Curse at Soho Rep, Idaho! for New York Musical Theatre Festival (winner “Best Director” and “Best Show of Fest” Awards 2008), Susie Mosher’s The Great Daisy Theory at 54 Below and The Laurie Beechman Theatre, Fingers and Toes at NYMF, the Off-Broadway premiere of Alan Ball’s The Amazing Adventures of Tense Guy and Wicked's 5th Anniversary Celebration: The Yellow Brick Road Not Taken at the Gershwin Theater on Broadway.
Matt directed the first national tour of A Christmas Story: The Musical in 2014, and he has worked at many of the country's finest regional theaters. Credits include: [title of show] at the George Street Playhouse, The Foreigner at the Maltz Jupiter Theater (Carbonelle Award for Best Play 2014), Les Miserables, God of Carnage, Love! Valour! Compassion! and Dirty Blond at Zach Theatre in Austin, Victor Victoria at Ogunquit Playhouse, South Pacific at Casa Manana and North Carolina Theater, The Full Monty at NCT, Disney's Beauty and the Beast at The MUNY in St. Louis (2005, 2010 and 2015) and at The North Carolina Theater and Michigan Opera Theater, Elton John & Tim Rice's Aida at The MUNY and at Gateway Playhouse, the world premiere of Martin Casella’s Scituate and Saint Heaven at The Stamford Center for the Arts, The Irish Curse for the NY International Fringe Festival and Short North Stage, Idaho! at The Forestburgh Playhouse, Confidentially Cole at the Tiffany Theatre in LA, and productions of Twelfth Night, Hair, The Ten Percent Revue and The Who's Tommy.
Matt was the Associate Director to Tony Award-winner Jack O’Brien on the original production of Hairspray on Broadway as well as on the National Tours, Las Vegas, the UK, Toronto and in Cologne, Germany. He directed acclaimed Hairspray productions at The Paper Mill Playhouse, the St. Louis MUNY as well as 3 national tours for NETworks and a ground-breaking production in Johannesburg, South Africa.
Matt was the Associate Director for Catch Me If You Can on Broadway and he directed the 2012-13 First National Tour. He was Molly Smith's Associate Director for The Velocity of Autumn on Broadway and was the Resident Director for Disney's Beauty and the Beast on Broadway and National Tours. Also for Disney Theatrical Productions, he was Associate Director on Elton John & Tim Rice's Aida in its World Premiere at the Alliance Theatre in Atlanta. He regularly teaches master classes and workshops in NYC and around the country at universities and for performing arts organizations. He received the 2010 Kevin Kline Award for Best Director, is a teaching artist for the Broadway Dreams Foundation and a Member of SDC.
